The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee just approved the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, with caveats. The measure provides $11.414 billion for the IRS, which increases funding for enforcement activities by $200 million over FY 2019.
Also included are prohibitions on funds used for IRS bonuses or for rehiring certain former employees; for the IRS to target groups for regulatory scrutiny “based on ideological beliefs”; and for the IRS to target individuals for “exercising their First Amendment rights.” The U.S. House has proposed slightly higher funding, of $12 billion.
